ABOUT

Oliver Edmonds - Optimal Osteopathy

Oliver is a UK-trained Osteopath – having completed his Master’s degree in 2020 at Swansea University UK. Since then, he has worked in South Wales, New Zealand and now, Hong Kong. He has extensive experience working with individuals from all walks of life and working backgrounds; from farmers, to teachers, to professional athletes – to name just a few. Oliver is also an NASM-certified personal trainer.

Oliver has a specific interest in the mechanics and physiology of breathing and how the movement of ribcage, spine and relevant musculatures are significant in healthy living – particularly in a seated, desk-based society. His thesis investigated the association between poor breathing mechanics, sleep-disordered breathing dysfunctions and the subsequent consequences of poor-quality sleep.

Oliver was born in the UK but grew up in Hong Kong. He loves the outdoors, particularly long distance thru-hiking and is also a long-time dinghy sailor. When he can’t get out of the city he enjoys going to the gym, swimming and martial arts – having a background in Chinese Kenpo Karate and experience with Jiu Jitsu.

OSTEOPATHY

What is Osteopathy?

An “integrative” manual therapy approach. Primarily, Osteopaths focus on abnormal joint movement patterns and possible presence of inflammatory changes when diagnosing and treating the body.

The approach is hands-on and centred around improving joint mobility, reducing soft tissue restrictions, and highlighting any muscular imbalances that may be associated. It focuses on the body “as a whole”, where it is important to consider not only the specific point of pain or dysfunction, but other contributing aspects that may be present elsewhere, both in and out of the body.

Although its approach is often musculoskeletal in nature, neurological, systemic and lifestyle health is also observed, to gain a greater understanding of each person’s specific needs. It is important to remember that factors such as diet, sleep, levels of physical activity, occupation and mental health can all contribute to pain or dysfunction – no two individuals are the same and Osteopathy observes this.

Back pain, neck pain, sports injuries – sprains, strains, tears. Recovering fractures/breaks. Headaches/migraines. Arthritis, rheumatisms. Pregnancy related lower back pain. Repetitive strain injury/occupational overuse injury, “Tech/text-neck”. Hip, knee, foot and ankle pains. Sciatica. Shoulder dysfunctions (rotator cuff injury/impingement, frozen shoulder). Tennis/Golfers elbow, wrist pain and carpal-tunnel syndrome. Whiplash associated disorders. And much more.

Everyone! Oliver generally treats aged 10 years and up. You do not necessarily need to be in pain to seek treatment and its benefits. Preventative maintenance is just as beneficial as pain and injury management – especially in the fast-paced HK environment. Lots of people find treatment beneficial because “it feels nice” – this is ok too!

Osteopathic treatment is totally safe. Treatment sessions and techniques used are totally catered to you and are supported by extensive medical history being taken prior.

It is not normally painful. All techniques and treatments are explained first to ensure understanding and comfort. Some treatments can be physically uncomfortable depending on the person and the complaint, your Osteopath is mindful of this and can alter accordingly or work within comfortable tolerance. It doesn’t need to hurt!

Mild soreness around the treated area or light headache following neck-work is normal for the first 24 hours post-consultation. This sounds counter-intuitive, but is generally a short-lived result of the body being unused to certain techniques. Feel free to contact us if you have any concerns.

These three modalities of manual therapy are generally quite similar. Schools of thought and clinical approach differ between them and from practitioner to practitioner.

Osteopathy as performed by Oliver uses a combination of soft tissue massage, manual/assisted joint mobilisations, joint adjustment/manipulation (where necessary) and exercise/stretching advice on how you can manage yourself outside of sessions. It uses some of the best parts of all three modalities.

For at-home consultations, Oliver will bring a massage table. Ideally, including space for your practitioner to work comfortably, about 240x120cm is required. They may also request you provide a bath-towel to preserve your own modesty in instances where possibly required. Clothing-wise, shorts and t-shirt or strapped top is preferable, but please wear what you feel most comfortable in.

Home visits: First-Time/Initial consultations are 1 hour and 15 mins – 15mins of initial assessment, 45 mins treatment and 15mins of set-up/packing away/admin time.

Follow-up consultations last 1 hour – this includes 45mins of treatment and assessment and 15mins of set-up/packing away/admin time.

Clinic Locations: Initial and follow-up consultations both last 45 minutes.

Generally, yes – but please check with your provider first.

If you are uncertain in any way about having consultations on a one-to-one basis, you are more than welcome to bring someone you trust, if it makes you more comfortable.
